Alan Weisman to visit the Keweenaw, April 12, 2007

alanAlan Weisman, internationally renowned author, will be coming to Michigan Tech on April 12. Weisman's visit was arranged by the Students for Environmental Sustainability (SfES) and focuses on his book, "Gaviotas: A village to Reinvent the World." More book info at: http://www.chelseagreen.com/1998/items/gaviotas.

His visit complements 2007 Earth Week events that were also planned by SfES. In addition to hosting panel discussions and other activities related to Weisman's book, "Gaviotas: A village to Reinvent the World," SfES also provided 50 copies of book free of charge to people who attended Earth Week sessions. On top of the book give aways, another 40 books were purchased for two interdisciplinary book groups that have been formed at Michigan Tech and Finlandia University, and Weisman's visit includes sessions with each of them. He is also being interviewed for the upcoming WMTU radio show on sustainability issues called, "Noticing Nature" that will air on Sunday, April 15 from 7:00-8:00 p.m.

One of the biggest highlights of Weisman's visit will be his evening presentation on Thursday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Forestry Building G002. Students, faculty, staff, and the public are invited and strongly encouraged to attend.

Alan Weisman is currently senior editor and producer for Homelands Productions, an independent, non-profit journalism cooperative. His reports have appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, Harper's, The New York Times Magazine, The Los Angeles Times Magazine, Audubon, Mother Jones, Discover, Condé Nast Traveler and have been heard on National Public Radio and Public Radio International. He is also the author of several books, including Gaviotas: A Village to Reinvent the World and La Frontera: The United States Border With Mexico.

Weisman's visit is being hosted by the Students for Environmental Sustainability, along with the support of a host of sponsors, including:

The Environmental Sustainability Committee, Undergraduate Student Government, College of Engineering, College of Sciences & Arts, School of Technology, School of Forest Resources & Environmental Sciences, School of Business & Economics, the Pavlis Leadership Institute, Sustainable Futures Institute, Finlandia University, MTU Engineers Without Borders, MTU Civil/Environmental Engineering Department, and the MTU Society for Environmental Engineering.
