aquariums; non-perishable food items; artwork/posters; bedding; bins, baskets, Rubbermaid containers; books; binders; school supplies; CDs, tapes, movies, videogames; cleaning supplies; clothes and shoes (must be clean!); furniture, tables, chairs, futons, desks; holiday lights; kitchen items (must be clean!); lumber (dorm lots, etc.); laundry supplies; pet supplies; plants; sports equipment/recreational items; towels (must be clean!); toys; TVs, stereos, tape players, walkmans, CD players; corkboards; wipe boards; small appliances; phones; toasters, cell phones, microwaves; dishware, silverware, utensils; jewelry & accessories; cardboard boxes, gift boxes; musical instruments; prescription and sun glasses
Please do not bring:

Earth Week Events
The Students for Environmental Sustainability are showing two movies and hosting a talk by Research Professor Rolf Peterson (SFRES) to celebrate Earth Week.
"Plant Earth: Seasonal Forests" will be shown on Tuesday, March 18, and "Princess Mononoke" will be shown on Wednesday, March 19—both at 7 p.m. in M & M U113.
Peterson, a wolf expert, will present "The Wolves of Isle Royale after 50 Years" on Thursday, March 20, at 7 p.m. in M & M U115. Trail mix will be provided. In addition, 70 copies of Peterson's book "The Wolves of Isle Royale: A Broken Balance" will be given away.
Earth Week events are held during the week of international Earth Day, which occurs on the vernal equinox (March 21 this year).

Alan
Weisman to visit the Keweenaw, April 12, 2007
Alan
Weisman, internationally renowned author, will
be coming to Michigan Tech on April 12.
Weisman's visit was arranged by the Students for
Environmental Sustainability (SfES) and focuses
on his book, "Gaviotas: A village to Reinvent
the World." More book info at:

His visit complements 2007
Earth Week events that were also planned by SfES. In
addition to hosting panel discussions and other
activities related to Weisman's book, "Gaviotas: A
village to Reinvent the World," SfES also provided
50 copies of book free of charge to people who
attended Earth Week sessions. On top of the book
give aways, another 40 books were purchased for two
interdisciplinary book groups that have been formed
at Michigan Tech and Finlandia University, and
Weisman's visit includes sessions with each of them.
He is also being interviewed for the upcoming WMTU
radio show on sustainability issues called,
"Noticing Nature" that will air on Sunday, April 15
from 7:00-8:00 p.m.
One of the biggest highlights
of Weisman's visit will be his evening presentation
on Thursday, April 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Forestry
Building G002. Students, faculty, staff, and the
public are invited and strongly encouraged to
attend.
Alan Weisman is currently
senior editor and producer for Homelands
Productions, an independent, non-profit journalism
cooperative. His reports have appeared in The
Atlantic Monthly, Harper's, The New York Times
Magazine, The Los Angeles Times Magazine, Audubon,
Mother Jones, Discover, Condé Nast Traveler and have
been heard on National Public Radio and Public Radio
International. He is also the author of several
books, including Gaviotas: A Village to Reinvent the
World and La Frontera: The United States Border With
Mexico.
Weisman's visit is being hosted
by the Students for Environmental Sustainability,
along with the support of a host of sponsors,
including:

Forest Resources & Environmental Sciences, School of

Mission
I.
Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Students for Environmental
Sustainability to
serve as a resource organization for environmental
sustainability on the
MTU campus and to raise awareness of environmental
sustainability on
Michigan Tech's campus and in the surrounding
community. SfES has the following two main
objectives: (1) coordinate Earth Week events
annually at Michigan Tech for campus and community
members and (2) plan and execute any additional
activities pertaining to environmental
sustainability, as decided annually by the current
membership.
II. Purpose and
