Twenty-two community and campus members participated
in the Environmental Photography Contest. A total of
seventy-nine entries were submitted. These
amazing amateur works of art were on exhibit Tuesday
through Friday April 19-22, 2005 in the MUB Commons
(specifically, in the small side room that used to
contain the arcade machines). On Thursday, Jim
Brandenburg, our featured guest speaker visited
Brian Parmeter’s photography class at 8:00am, with
the public being invited as well. Many of Brian
Parmeter’s students entered the photo contest. At
11:00am, Jim finalized the judging of the photos,
and at 11:45am, the winners were announced.
The photo contest winners present at the awards
announcement were invited to attend a lunch with Jim
Brandenburg at noon on Thursday in the MUB
Ballroom. The contest winners and Brandenburg
enjoyed a delightful hour of conversation over soup
and salad. Only one photo contest winner was unable
to attend the luncheon, and he was awarded a gift
certificate to The Studio in downtown Houghton.
The Students for Environmental Sustainability
greatly appreciated the tremendous participation in
the photo contest and were thoroughly impressed by
all works of art submitted. Feel free to
browse the winning entries below to get a feel for the various
works of art submitted this year.

The purpose of this category was to highlight a
photograph that possesses strength in composition,
technique, and message. Brandenburg felt that this
entry is publishable material. Some of the reasons
that this photo was selected were (1) the difficulty
in capturing a moment like this one (still pictures
of birds are significantly easier to shoot since you
can take your time, move around, etc.) and (2) the
feelings evoked by this photo are tremendous – the
power and strength of the eagle are undeniable and
(3) the overall quality of the view is excellent.

This category intended to highlight a photograph
with excellent content layout. Interestingly, Mr.
Gagnon took this photograph with a disposable
camera, which just exemplifies that fancy equipment
is not always needed to take an award-winning shot.

Although other categories have just one entry by one
artist, Brandenburg chose to highlight all of Mr.
Stroud’s work as all of the entries possessed a
similar strong technique. Brandenburg also noted
that bird photography is quite difficult to master,
aside from having excellent technique.

Brandenburg realized that Mr. Wong was not to walk
away from this contest without recognition of his
obvious talent. He was a close second for Best
