Recycling (Kristine)
• IFC did not have any questions/comments upon attending
their meeting. Let’s continue forwarding the ifc-l email
list the First Monday of the Month Drop-off email reminders.
Let’s approach IFC again in the fall for involvement.
(Mella)
• We sent off two shipments of paper recently. A
shredded paper compactor costs about $400, and it appears
that facilities found some space for it. ESC can afford
this and will make this purchase in the near future.
• TV/monitor recycling is still in the works. We
need a locked cash box for it. [after the meeting, such
a box was found in all of the items that the Alumni
House was giving away]
• Recycling Sub-committee will meet within the next
two weeks – look for an email announcement!
Green Purchasing (Alexis/Anna)
• In a meeting with Ray Lasenen, we discovered that
purchasing for office supplies is not centralized.
• All administrative assistants that handle the purchasing
of office supplies were emailed to learn about what
products they currently purchase and the price they
pay for these supplies. Only one response was received
after two emails being sent over a 3 week period.
• New Ideas provided at this meeting for GP to pursue:
use recycling liaisons to help, make in-person contacts/
interviews, start with the big departments first, work
with Terry Collette of Central Stores, offer info on
website about greener products, track which departments
are using green products on the ESC website, and the
idea that everyone liked the most was… choose one product
to make a difference campus wide – recycled paper (possibly
through Manistique, since we send our paper for recycling
to them). (Thanks for all of these ideas!!! J)
Energy Efficiency (Theresa)
• Energy Efficiency Sub-committee will meet within
the next couple of weeks – look for an email!
• Ideas: continue working with IT staff regarding
turning off work stations overnight; set up a network
of building watch dogs to post monthly utility costs/usage,
discover and report problems, and help publicize how
to conserve energy in the workplace; publish regular
tips on workplace energy conservation (ESC website,
facilities website, the Lode, Tech Topics?).
• The Sustainability Seminar for Graduate Students
is going to do a project at the end of the semester.
Perhaps they will look at Energy Efficiency, and can
work with our ESC Subcommittee. (Kristine)
• Other Ideas provided: find a way to link academic
building’s energy costs directly to students, because
auxiliary services actually pay their own energy bills.
Transportation Alternatives (Mike/Shalini)
• Mostly in the idea building stage of efforts.
• Look into state van/car pool program, and see how
Tech can be involved. (suggested by Kristine)
Green Buildings/Green Landscaping (Angela)
• We’ll need to fill the chair position of this subcommittee
come May, because Angela is graduating! (Congratulations,
Angela!!!) Kristine expressed interest in being chair,
if she can share the recycling subcommittee responsibilities
with a co-chair. (hint, hint, we need a recycling co-chair
as well)
Education/PR (Jess)
• There is still some concern that our ESC slides
are not showing up on the Filmboard movie previews.
Mella said she may go to the movie this weekend (03/27)
to check on the status of our previews!
Financial/Executive (Shalini/Alexis)
• Per Steve Stackhouse, we should not count on corporate
support for next year. We should be thinking about foundations
and grants. We’ll be working on writing grant proposals
this summer.
• Shalini will access updated account information
on April 5 or after.
SFES/EW (Alexis)
• Students for Environmental Sustainability is now
an official student organization. A website will be
made as a page off of the ESC website, and SFES is considered
to be a new subcommittee of ESC.
• A draft logo design using the ESC logo is in the
works, and will be brought to the next ESC meeting.
One idea is to use the leaf on the ESC logo, and place
the acronym in the leaf, so that the SFES logo is a
sub-logo of the ESC logo. At this meeting, another suggestion
was made to use both leaves for the SFES logo instead
of just one.
