Meeting Minutes

1. Recycling and “Greeks”: (Alexis, Bethany, & Mella) Before the holiday break, Alexis and Bethany visited an Interfraternity Council (IFC) and gave a verbal short presentation of the First of the Month Recycling Drop-off. After the IFC meeting, Alexis prepared a memo explaining the program and Bethany worked with Kristine to gather recycling information handouts. These items need to be put together, copied, and placed into the mailboxes of each Greek organization on campus. Mella is a member of the IFC and will assist in the ESC giving a follow-up presentation to IFC to answer any questions. Kristine suggested that the Greeks could also have two other times a month to bring paper to campus, to prevent paper from becoming a fire hazard at their homes. The two other times would be in conjunction with the TV/monitor recycling drop-offs.

  1. Recycling Dos/Don’ts Posters: (Kristine) Two 3-D posters have been created showing which items are permitted and prohibited in the MTU Paper Recycling Program. These posters are complete and waiting in Kristine’s office to be posted.

  1. MUB Pop Can Collection: (Alexis) This is working well so far, with pick-ups occurring bi-monthly. The deposit money collected prior to the holiday break totaled $25.00, which needs to be given to Shalini to be deposited in the ESC account.

  1. Filmboard Success: (Jess) Four ESC slides were created by Jess Brakora to be shown weekly at the movies shown in Fisher Hall by the Filmboard. This will be great publicity for ESC, because the slides are shown at least 6 times per week to large audiences. The slides have catchy sayings and images to encourage sustainable behavior, like walking to campus and recycling. Good Work, Jess!

  1. Update on the Greenprint: (Alexis and Shalini) Finally, progress is being made! A few mission statement options have been put together for review at the next ESC meeting.

  1. Earth Week 2004: The first planning meeting has been set for Tuesday February 10, 2004 at 5:15 pm in DOW 642. (Location to be confirmed) The following various organizations/people will be invited by the ESC member in parentheses to attend for input or participation in Earth Week 2004:

Kristine Fields (Alexis) Forestry Club/Society of American Foresters (Al)

SEEn/MWEA (Ashley/Mella) Joan Chadde/PamSchmidt (GEM) (Kristine)

  1. ESC Involvement List: (Kristine) It was passed around the meeting for review, and comments were to be written on the list for Kristine to add. Any other ways that ESC has been involved recently should be emailed to Kristine at kbradof@mtu.edu to be added to the list.

  1. ESC Goals for 2004: The following were goals for fall of 2003, that were achieved: Home Winterization Luncheon; Articles in the Lode, Tech Topics, Keweenaw Now, DMG; and develop a system for Meeting Minutes.
