Meeting Minutes
1. Bill Sproule’s Transportation Project:
(Mike) A summary of the Keweenaw National Historic Park
Project follows: “The purpose of the project is to conduct
a market demand/financial feasibility study to assess
the feasibility and appropriateness of a transportation
system for the Keweenaw National Historical Park. The
study will provide information to estimate the demand
for a system and then determine the financial feasibility.
The study will focus on three primary service areas
or routes: 1. Quincy unit service between the proposed
Welcome Center at the smelter complex (in Ripley on
Portage Lake) and the Qunicy mine area. 2. Calumet service
3. A link between the Quincy unit and Calumet along
the U.S. 41 corridor. As part of the study, potential
transportation modes and routes to serve the three service
areas will be identified. Among the modes that would
be considered include buses, rubber-tired trolleys,
vintage trolleys (old streetcars), and railroads. We
will also look at extending the cog railroad in the
Quincy unit to link the Welcome Center with the Quincy
Hoist and proposed Seamen Museum on Quincy Hill. The
system could link parts of the park and provide exciting
opportunities to enhance visitors' experiences at the
park. A visitor survey and market demand work will be
completed next summer and the project is expected to
be completed late next fall.” Definitely the Transportation
Alternatives subcommittee could become involved. It
was suggested to get in touch with Frank Fiala, and
possibly Kristina Fields, because this may fit in nicely
with her work. Mike felt that the ESC could be of assistance
in the areas of providing historically accurate alternative
options and conducting the survey.
2. Subcommittee Recruitment: Collectively,
we created the following list of people that we would
like to contact about joining the respective subcommittees
of ESC.Energy Efficiency: Barry Solomon, Leonard
Bohmann, Dave Taivalkoski, Merle Kindred
Transportation
Alternatives: Bill Sproule & his Grad Students,
Kristina Fields, Katie Alvord, Lori Hawswirth (WUPPDR)
Education/P.R.:
Craig Waddell, CCLI/members of HU classes that might
take our "project" for their class assignment, Lode
Staff Member, University relations (Tech Topics, etc.),
Residence hall staff/ Ras, Michelle Niemela, Merle Kindred,
Daniel Heights Newsletter person
Green landscaping:

Andy Niemi (or other grounds person)
3. Brown Bag Lunch: Home Winterizing: November
19, 2003 12-1 MUB Red Metal Room 105 Theresa has done
an excellent job at organizing this event so far, and
the rest of the meeting was spent helping her further
plan and brainstorm. Merle Kindred has interest in the
event. Angela contacted UPPCO, and a brochure will be
sent about tips on how to winterize one’s home. Suggested
speakers or guests include Mike Powers (he attended
a conference pertaining to this topic recently), Dave
Bach (designs energy efficient homes in the area), Merle
Kindred (owns an energy efficient home), an UPPCO representative,
and Leonard Bohman. All members were very motivated
to help Theresa out in any way, especially with the
following publicity ideas: Tech Topics (Shalini volunteered
to notify TT by Friday to be included in the next week’s
edition), alldept-l email list (send Monday 17th),
Lode (a follow up article too), the Bull, WMTU Announcement,
Table tents in the MUB only (put out Monday 17th),
EDS, DMG community events/letter to editor, email student
organizations, mention at IFC meeting, posters in the
MUB and on the ESC kiosk. This event may be something
similar to a “Tech Tea Time,” and could include a panel
of speakers to give mini-presentations and probe questions.
4. Spring Meeting Time: Send all schedules
via email to Alexis by Monday November 17th
to be notified at the next ESC meeting when the best
time is for the spring ESC meetings.
5. Update on the Greenprint: Again, not much
progress has come about the GP since the last meeting.
Shalini and Alexis feel awful for saying that they
would take on the responsibility of finishing it
off, and not living up to their word. They would
really like to have it out of ESC hands before the
spring semester...
6. Future meeting schedule (with tentative plan):
